| Joe
Smernicki graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 1973,
having gained a High Commendation in his Post- graduate year. Since
then he has worked as a teacher and painted in the Tayside area. He
currently lives in Montrose and is Head of Expressive Arts in Arbroath
Academy. The inspiration for Joe’s work comes almost exclusively
from the coastal and rural environment around his home town of Montrose.
The paintings reflect a dual interest. On one hand they are portrayals
of a very distinctive and visually rich landscape with its fishing
stations, small boats, farm implements and sheds. Equally the paintings
are an exploration of colour, tone, shape and line that are brought
together in a carefully balanced composition. The combination of these
interests, along with a highly distinctive and analytical style of
painting result in works that possess a clarity and impact all of
their own. The works show not only a physical location, but capture
the feeling and essence of the place. |
