George Grant

Artists Statement
For some time I have been producing work rooted in Scottish landscape and history, attempting to capture a timeless visionary quality, while trying to represent the spirit of place.
My sources are from particular locations where people and their land, or water, are closely bound together, and I am particularly drawn to the mystical times and places associated with Scottish ritual and festival.
Being mainly neo–romantic in outlook, my diverse influences include Scottish painting before the Colourists, Pringle, Guthrie, Cameron and Walton, also small scale work of Seurat, Vuillard, Pinkham Ryder, Whistler and Turner. Photography is important to me, both as source and influence, notably amateur and early primitive images.
Most recent work has been in media of acrylic, oil and conte crayon, on supports of wood panel and paper. I use the natural grain and texture of these materials as integral elements of the image.
