Born
and brought up in Denny, Stirlingshire, David attended Denny High
School before studying drawing and painting at Duncan of Jordanstone
college of Art, Dundee (1974 – 1978).
Awarded a post diploma year, David was highly commended and awarded
a Scottish Education Department travelling scholarship in 1979 which
he used to paint in Athens.
After
successive jobs as Art Worker, Craft Instructor, Interior / Furniture
designer, David took a break from painting to pursue a career
in industrial and commercial art, and now runs a successful company.
Balancing
work commitments with his interest in fine art has allowed David
to return to painting and he has started to exhibit again.
David
adopts a direct approach to landscape painting using colour harmonies
and tonal variations to express his vision of the countryside
around him. Using earthy greens and browns David opens his canvasses
to light and air as he renders the transition of filtering morning
sunlight into deep purple shadow. Working in oil and mixed media,
he embraces a variety of styles and visual disciplines which can
vary markedly in response to subject, mood and the weather. From
the unified harmony of wooded country lanes, streams and footpaths
to the abstract vibrancy of stormy shore lines he retains a continuity
of inspiration between them.
